Sustainable Farming Through Non-Dairy Innovation—Better for the Planet, the Farmer and you

Our founder, Laura Shenkar

“Milk it for all it’s worth” used to suggest someone was being a bit greedy. But it can be a good thing. Especially when it comes to American pecans.

CEO and founder Laura Shenkar was working to preserve freshwater ecosystems and saw how pecan production motivated farmers to conserve water. Pecans are an anchor for native plant ecosystems, water sustainability, and regenerative agriculture. The problem? The pecans themselves needed a larger market. While premium half-shell pecans fetch a premium, farmers struggle to sell pecan pieces at a consistent price.

So Laura founded Lifestock and went to work with leading pecan growers to develop a creamy, nutritious pecan milk that could upcycle even the smallest pecan pieces. With the launch of THIS PKN, people get delicious, dairy-free milk on their tables and also support American farmers and regenerative farming practices.

THIS IS what PECANS can do

Really, it’s all about health. When you choose to center your diet around plants, you’re healthier. Your local ecosystem is healthier. And you help to protect the planet’s health, too.

Let’s focus on your health first. Pecans contain a higher ratio of antioxidants than any other common tree nut and are packed with vitamins A, B, and E, plus omega-3 fats, folic acid, magnesium, calcium, potassium, phosphorous, and zinc. They’re linked to a decrease in heart disease, type 2 diabetes, cognitive decline, and inflammatory bowel disease.

They’re not just great for you, though. Pecans also do a lot for our local ecosystem — and they can be an anchor for our future. Pecan trees are native to the U.S. (unlike a lot of other tree nuts) and can be a boon to our local farming communities. They foster the microbes, insects, and other plants that help local ecosystems thrive, too.

But there’s more! The leading plant-based dairy alternatives create a sizable carbon footprint with their distribution around the globe. Pecans are different. Since they’re grown right here — and always have been — you get a delicious, health-forward dairy alternative with fewer negative environmental impacts.

Long story short: we’re dedicated to developing next-generation plant-based foods that tap into the distinctive flavor and benefits of pecans, supporting your health, the health of our ecosystems, and our planet’s wellbeing. Did we mention they’re delicious?
